Dairy Central is being renovated as we speak and is set to be completed in 2020. The reconstruction brings 30,000 square feet of restaurants and retail space with up to 14 vendor stalls. Some remember the building as McGrady’s Irish Pub while more recent community members remember it as Cho’s Nacho’s and Beer and our fortunate few remember it as Monticello Ice Cream Company from 1936. The old Monticello Dairy building was a place for locals to eat ice cream, talk and enjoy local events. Much like it’s history, the new Dairy Central aims to restore the old ideals as well as provide 50,000 square feet of office space and around 180 apartments. This mix of old and new will continue to bring a central focus to the downtown area. Inspired by similar spaces like Atlanta’s Crog Street Market and Napa Valley’s Ox Bow Public Market, Charlottesville will continue to be an innovator in the new ideas and respectful of the historical memories.
