Charlottesville - Downtown

History and modern convenience intertwine in the stunning area that is Downtown Charlottesville. Referred to as the Downtown Mall, this part of Charlottesville is booming with life and is the ideal place to enjoy the arts, theater, culture, fine dining, shopping and much more. The Downtown Mall area stretches approximately 8 blocks, with the current setup dating back to the mid 1970s. This being said, the region has a long history that dates back to the 1730s. The section that is now the Downtown Mall was one of the main routes through Virginia in Colonial times.

Walkability
Downtown Charlottesville is a walker's paradise. The area is pedestrians only, so there is no worry of through traffic. Over 120 shops, most of which are locally owned, 30 plus restaurants and numerous conveniences are all set just steps from one another, which makes for an interesting experience every time. In addition, there are a great deal of art galleries and museums nearby to further the culture.

Stunning Scenery
Throughout Downtown Charlottesville, historic structures mingle with modern feats. Some of the buildings, such as the Paramount Theater, date back to the early 1900s. The paved walkways and plazas complement the unique architecture perfectly. Tall trees, water features and beautiful seating areas come together to give Downtown a welcoming feel. Flower-filled planters surround many of the businesses to add further charm.

Fostering Community
One of the best things about the Downtown Mall area of Charlottesville is the sense of community. There is a farmers market each Saturday, "Art Walks" and many free concerts throughout the year. There are great places to enjoy live music throughout the city, and plenty of benches to sit on and have a conversation with friends. Perhaps the best example of Downtown's commitment to the people is the community chalkboard: three large freestanding walls that are free for the children, adults and anyone in between to decorate as they see fit. This dedication makes Downtown Charlottesville an enjoyable place to visit and to live.
